So What's Next?
Setting a SMART target, such as a real-time shift target count, is an effective way of creating an incremental jump in performance, but what comes next? Start an improvement activity where it will have the biggest impact; on a top loss. By applying SMART to your top loss you focus your improvement effort where it will have the maximum impact. And that is going from SMART to smarter! The essence of moving from being SMART to Smarter can be summarized as three simple steps:
- Track (accurately capture information that identifies your losses)
- Pick (use that information to identify your top improvement priority)
- Fix (take sustained action to address that top improvement priority)
Every company knows what they made (production counts). Very few companies accurately track what they lost (productive time). The gold standard for tracking lost equipment producvity is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), with a breakdown of OEE losses into the Six Big Losses, and a further breakdown of OEE Availability losses into Down Time Reasons.
