Maker Stories: Discover the human side of products

While I love building software, there's something about making physical things with your hands that software just can't fill. It's why I do woodworking and garden religiously...I've got to get away from the digital and go analog.

Maker highlights the people who've made the leap from fun hobby to real businesses with real tangible products that they've poured their heart and soul in to. Fascinating reads.

Lessons Learned Growing a Startup From Zero to $100k/month in 2 Years

This collection of takeaways from Alex Turnbull, Founder of Groove, on their journey to grow their startup to $100k/month is fascinating. It's single handedly some of the most actionable stuff on the web.

The cold emails that got me meetings at Twitter, LinkedIn and GitHub

Say what you will about cold emails, but when they're done correctly they can be solid ways to get meetings (and close sales) that your business needs.

In the early days of Baremetrics I used these tips to email hundreds of potential customers, many of whom became customers then and are still with us today.

54 Screwups as a Startup CEO

I love reading about the journeys of other people. There's a lot of value in seeing how all of the dots connect. Anand Sanwal, CEO of CB Insights, shares 54 of those dots as they've grown to be a multi-million dollar business.

My favorite on the list? #42: Cared about competitors too much. Seriously, stop caring about competitors. When you pay attention to competitors you can only be reactive...you'll always be one step behind.

Bootstrapped to Funded: What’s it like? Was it worth it? Should you do it?

What’s it like going from a decade of bootstrapping to running a funded business? And what’s it like transitioning a business that started out bootstrapped to having a pile of cash at my disposal? Has it been worth it? Is VC money evil? I tackle all of those questions as we take a look at what it's been like since we closed a $500,000 round of funding.

The War of Art

This book, by Steven Pressfield, was pivotal for me in the early Baremetrics days. Patrick Vlaskovits recommended it to me (demanded may be a better word) when I kept making excuses for why Baremetrics wasn't bigger already. It literally changed the game for me.

This should be required reading for any Founder, especially in the early days. It's also a quick read (I read it on 2-hour flight).

Guy Kawasaki: The Top 10 Mistakes of Entrepreneurs

Guy Kawasaki has been around the block many times. He's had his hand in a lot of different ventures, written a dozen books and, whether you agree with everything he says or not, he's likely just got more experience than you do with life in general (as tends to happen with age).

So, it's worth listening to what he has to say.

Ever play the "what if" game with your numbers? Wonder what your revenue would be in 12 months if you could just reduce churn by 1%? What if you grew 15% each month?

Baremetrics has just released a free tool that can tell you just that
